The Phone Code

Knaus was in charge of most of the utility bills at Comstock. His collection style was to wait several months, then leave a note on the kitchen table:

“You each $231.56 by end of week or the power will be shut off.”

Needless to say the phone was shut off often. We worked out that if you pick up the phone immediately then you will be connected to the caller. This meant everyone who ever called our house knew the “Phone Code”; call the house and let it ring 6-7 times. If no one picks up, then wait one minute and call back. This will give the house time to wait by the phone to pick up immediately.

I highly doubt this would work now-a-days.
